It’s been a good event. Ivy and finally Nottawa will be better and better.
“The Chili is Cooking” and it was excellent. Cooks set up and started cooking by noon.
The Top Choice for best chili cooking site was Gloria.
EUCHRE was being played while the Chili was cooking. We had quite a range of players from the eldest (over 65) to the youngest who has yet to see his 20’s.
He did fairly well coming away with a trophy.
Not everyone would be happy but these two consolation prize winners still had a smile on their faces. (click to see a larger picture so you can really appreciate their award)
All this time the Chili is hot and getting hotter. Finally the moment of tasting and judging is upon us. Here, Lenore Job, the Convenor of this event and grand master of all that is Chili, is giving instructions to our two celebrity judges, Mike MacEachern, the past Mayor of New Tecumseth, and Amy MacPherson, an Investigative Journalist (CBC, Huffington Post) who lives in Wasaga Beach .
This was serious business with very high stakes, or perhaps I should say “hot” stakes! Both Judges maintained this has been the most difficult decisions they have made in years. It was an intense job as can be seen. But they came through in style and rendered their verdict. Their obvious skills were later substantiated by the “people’s choice” tally which matched their choice for the best of the best chefs.
AND THE AWARDS CEREMONIES WERE ON:
1st: Shawn Carrierre – Clearview Twp
2nd: Bob Higginson – Essa Twp
3rd: Gloria Peckford – New Tecumseth
. . . . . and the award for the Sunnidale Chef of the 1st Simcoe-Grey Chili games was crowned.
(Actually, as you can see I almost chopped his head off)
Of course, lots was going on as this was unfolding. We had a great dinner, CHILI of course, five different to choose from. Each one was delicious and I personally eliminated only two as not to my taste in the first round. My second round still left me without a winner so I had to go for a third helping before I reluctantly chose a winner.
All this while there was lots of other activities going on. The cash bar was a popular hang out to help pass the time between events, and help wash away the jalapenos. As with all such events they would never occur without the many volunteers who toiled long hours, sometimes unseen, and too frequently unrecognized for their selfless efforts.
Many Many Thanks to all of you!
But that wasn’t the end!
We had great dessert in the form of a delicious birthday cake for Amy (her 40th), one of our notable judges. (Cake supplied by her family – thank you much)
And we carried on into the night with our state of the art equipped D.J.
Rick is his name, and he provided a wide range of excellent music from the moment the Chili Chefs started cooking to the moment the cash bar closed.
A great day and a great Start for the
1st Simcoe-Grey Chili Games,
Our next event is in Ivy – April 18th.
And a grand finale where Chili Chef winners from the first 2 events will compete in Nottawa -May 23- for the title of “Best Chili Chef in Simcoe County“.
See you in Ivy!

My wife and I enjoyed the afternoon euchre tournament and the chili sampling dinner that followed – accolades due to Lenore and her pleasant team of volunteers for making this the success it was. Hope to join you all again at the Ivy or Nottawa event.
